Kuwait, Dec 15: KWAK (Kanajar Welfare Association, Kuwait), celebrated the Parish Feast of Kanajar on the 15th of December, 2002, at Village Inn Restaurant in Kuwait. The program started at 6.30 p.m. with a special prayer to thank Patron Our Lady of Lourdes by Mrs. Hilda D'Souza followed by a warm welcome speech by KWAK President Mr. Lawrence D'Souza. Chief Guests for the occasion Mr. Charles D'Sa, leading businessman and one of the co-sponsors of Lourdes Healthcare Hospital, Mrs. Ida D'Silva, President of Kuwait Canara Welfare Association (KCWA) and Fr. Melwin D'Cunha, Parish Priest of Ahmadi Parish were then honored with the presentation of bouquets.
General Secretary Mrs. Jecintha Pinto read out the activity report of KWAK and
Treasurer Mr. Dennis D'Souza presented the year to date Accounts Report for the
year 2002. Notable achievements of the activities during 2002 were the raffle
draw and annual picnic, which together generated an income of Rs. 2,50,000/-,
which has been sent to LHH project as contribution from KWAK.
The evening also marked the honoring of outstanding students from Kanajar in
different grades. Ms. Rochelle Jillian Mendonca was honored for securing first
place in the Final Year of Bachelors in Occupational Therapy from Maharashtra
University of Health Sciences, Nashik. Master Joel Pinto for academic excellence
in 12th Std in 2001-2002, Ms Sharol Ashma Menezes & Ms Rouella Joan Mendonca
for academic excellence in 10th Std in 2000-2001. Fr. Melwin D'Cunha presented
plaques to the winners.
As part of entertainment, children attempted to tail a camel pictured on the
wall chart, while adults had hard time memorizing and then naming the names of
articles briefly displayed on the wall.
Kanajar Welfare Association (KWA) also known as Lourdes Kanajar Zamath is an
Organization of Kanajar Parishioners living in various Countries. The prime
motto of the Organization is the development of the Parish into a most modern,
infra-structurally self-sufficient neighborhood. Since its inception in Kuwait on
13th March 2000, the Association has not only spread its wings across other countries,
but also grown from strength to strength, undertaking developmental projects, of which
the Rs 1 Crore Lourdes Healthcare Center is the most ambitious one.
Mr. Lawrence Saldanha, Convenor of KWA and also Chairman of LHH, who had recently
visited Kanajar, briefed the audience on the progress of LHH. While thanking the
benefactors of LHH, particularly the Sponsors and Directors, he informed that a tie-up
arrangement with Catholic Community's prestigious institution Fr. Muller's Hospital,
Mangalore is at final stage of negotiation and that the commissioning of the first
phase of LHH is scheduled for 11th of February 2003. He appealed to the entire
catholic community to actively participate in this ambitious long-term project
aimed for the development of the community at large. Highlighting KWA activities
in different countries, the Convenor announced the recent formation of a new KWA
Unit in Mumbai on 1st December 2002. Chief Guests Fr. Melwin D'Cunha, Mr.
Charles D'Sa and Mrs. Ida D'S ilva all spoke to admire the unity of Kanajarians
worldwide and congratulated them for their remarkable achievements within a
short span of time.
As customary on the annual event, "KWAK Golden
Member for 2003" raffle was drawn by Mrs. Nora D'Sa and Vice-President Mr.
Walter Lobo (membership # 003) carrying a gold coin to be presented to the winner,
himself emerged a winner. Following the game of Bingo, a delicious dinner
(combination of caterers Johnny Suratkal and Village Inn) was served.
Mr. Wilfred Quadros proposed vote of thanks and Mrs. Jecintha Pinto
ably compeered the program.
