Dubai Sep 11: The Traditional Mangalorean way of celebration of Nativity of Mother Mary combined with new harvest is truly an international Festival of Mangaloreans. Kanajar Welfare Association, Emirates (KWAE) is part of the international organization of Kanajarians, living in the Emirates, which came into existence three years ago in October 2000.
KWAE members numbering about 70 came together with their families and friends on Thursday 11th September at Al-Mas hotel apartments Dubai to celebrate the Monthi Fest. The celebrations started with a prayer by Mrs. Lavina Saldanha followed by Mrs. Merlyn D'souza who read the gospel. In front of the statue of Infant Mary, the entire crowd sang the festive hymn "Sakkad Saangatha Melyan" and "Moriyek Hogollsiyam" in Konkani whilst the children showered flowers at the statue of Infant Mary.
Mr. Thomas Saldanha, the current president of KWAE briefed the audience about the association
and its existence in UAE as well as in other parts of the world. In his welcome speech, he praised
the efforts of Kanajarians in UAE for organizing such feasts and other social functions throughout
the year. Present on the occasion were Mrs. & Mr. Bernard Vas, Mr. Thomas Sequeira Abu Dhabi,
Mrs. & Mr. Louis Mendonca, Mr. Thomas A.D. Sequeira Al-Ain, Mr. Dayan D'souza of Daijidubai,
Mr. Cyril Sequeira (CGS Takode) and Ms. Marina Menezes.
Children and adults alike enjoyed the Games, fun and frolic organized for the evening lasting nearly 6 hours and ably conducted by Mrs. Vera Barboza & Mrs. Sunilla D'souza. The mouth-watering food prepared by members was then served on traditional Shirethi and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
