Kuwait, Dec 17: Kanajar Welfare Association Kuwait (KWAK) hosted its fun-filled and prestigious maiden Volley ball and Throw ball tournament at the American International School’s indoor stadium, Maidan Hawalli. A large crowd gathered to witness the best teams vying to clinch the top honor with nail biting finishes.
The mission of the association is to financially support the Kanajar Poor Children’s Education
Fund. Through this event KWAK aimed to create a sportsmanship environment for girls and women, boys
and men of Indian Community in Kuwait irrespective of their age, caste, creed, religion, culture and
also provide them with an opportunity to showcase their talent through this sport.
It was an early start on a bright Friday 17th December 2010 morning, when 7 Throw Ball teams and 10
Volley Ball Teams comprising women and Men from different walks of life assembled at AIS grounds, Hawalli,
Kuwait to take part in the Kanajar Trophy 2010. The inaugural programme commenced at 8:00 a.m. by
Dr. Nuna Goel and Dr. Mohan Das Along with event organizing Committee Mrs. Leena Fernandes,
Mr.Edward D’souza & Mr. Antony Miranda by releasing colorful balloons in the air. Mrs. Charlotte
D’souza Introduced the Chief Guest. President of the Association Mr. Henry Britto and sports secretary
Mr. Robert D’souza welcome the gathering and all the teams. As a gesture of love and appreciation
flower boquets were handed over to guests by KWAK active members.
The sponsors for the event were Dr. Sneha Latha Goel, Royal Plaza Caterers, Raymond Park Avenue Centre,
Ivan Mendies, Lawrence Saldanha, , Jenney’s Beauty Saloon, Robert D’souza and Clement Saldanha, Indian
Delight restaurant, City Garage, Robert Menezes, Village Inn Restaurant, Shetty’s Grocery and Disney
Mathias. The referees of the Tournament were: Mr. Ramesh (Indian Central School) and Mr. Satish (Integrated
School). The Line Referees were KWAK members. The Score board desk was manned by Charlotte D’souza and
Jyothi Fernandes.
The exciting tournament boiled down to nail biting semi-finals between Starz and KVWA, and Kuwait Konkans and
DUBOP. The grand final of the Kanajar throw ball cup 2010 was won by Kuwait Konkans, who beat Starz. The Runners
up spot went to Starz and 2nd runner-up trophy went to DUBOP. The grand final match of the Kanajar Throw Ball
Cup won by Kuwait Konkans beating Starz. DUBOP were awarded the 3rd place.
Following are the results of the Kanajar Throw Ball Cup 2010:
Winners: Kuwait Konkans, Runner Up: Starz, 2nd Runner up: DUBOP
Best All-rounder: Seema Miranda from Kuwait Konkans.
Best smasher: Silvia D’Souza from Starz.
Golden Arm service: Merlin Pereira from DUBOP.

Referee: Disney Mathias
Winner: Kunjal Friends
Runner-up: Salmiya-A
Second Runner-up: Norohna Brothers
Fourth place: Salmiya-C.
In semi final Salmiya-A beat Noronha Brothers and Kunjal Frends beat Salmiya-C,
Best Lifter: Melwyn from Kunjal
Best all rounder : Muben from Salmiya-A
Best sticker: Swaroop Salmiya-A
Various sponsors distributed the prizes and individual awards. Mr. Melwyn thanked all the sponsors
from their kind benevolence followed by participating teams, the enthusiastic supports, referees,
line referees, all volunteers at the event. KWAK ex-president Mr. Melwyn Mascarenhas was the Master
Of Ceremony. Kuwait’s well-known Walter kept the spectators entertained with his live commentary.
The well organized and exciting event concluded at 7:30 p.m.
